    Our political system may have been the first modern parliamentary democracy, but you wouldn’t want to drive to work in a Model T on a daily basis.

    In reality though by the time we started using First Past The Post in 1950 there were a number of cars people might like to try driving, although commuting in a 1950 Aston Martin DB2 is beyond the means of all but a few.

    If we had failed to update any other parts of our infrastructure or technology since 1948 we could choose to commute in a steam train rather than a brand new Morris Minor.
